The Difference Between IT Support and IT Security (And Why Your Business Needs Both)

If you’re a business owner, there’s a good chance you already have someone who assists with your IT needs. It could be a tech-savvy staff member who gets things working when something breaks, or it could be an external support company you call when emails stop flowing. That’s IT support.

But IT security? That’s a whole different beast.

And it’s one many businesses assume is already being taken care of, when in reality, it’s often overlooked.

Let’s break it down.

What Is IT Support?

IT support is what most people think of when they picture “computer help.” It’s the team (or person) who makes sure your day-to-day tech keeps running.

Here’s what IT support typically covers:

  1. Setting up new computers and accounts.
  2. Installing software.
  3. Fixing login issues, such as when someone forgets their password.
  4. Troubleshooting problems such as printers not working or programs freezing.
  5. Replacing faulty hardware.
  6. Helping staff with how-to questions.

It’s all about keeping things running and solving problems when they pop up.

If your computer is slow or your email won’t open, IT support is who you call.

But while that’s all important, it doesn’t mean your business is protected.

What Is IT Security?

IT security is about keeping your business safe from threats. These threats can be external, such as hackers, or internal, including accidental mistakes made by staff.

Here’s what proper IT security involves:

  1. Firewalls and antivirus software to protect your network.
  2. Monitoring for suspicious activity across systems and users.
  3. Data backups and recovery plans in case something goes wrong.
  4. Keeping systems up to date with the latest security patches.
  5. Making sure your business meets industry or legal security requirements.
  6. Training staff to spot scams and phishing emails.
  7. Monitoring for stolen company credentials or data on the dark web.
  8. Responding fast to potential breaches or signs of compromise.

While IT support focuses on fixing things when they break, IT security is about preventing them from getting broken in the first place, especially by someone trying to cause harm.

Don’t Assume You Have IT Security Just Because You Have IT Support

They think, “We already have someone who handles our IT, so we’re probably covered.”
