Network Cabling – do it properly

“Thanks for the cabling quote, but our general contractor is going to buy the parts and fit them. A couple of the guys from the office will help him out over the weekend. It doesn’t look too hard”.

Arrrrgggh!!!

When you are setting up a new office you have just one chance to put decent cabling in. Cabling that will work reliably for years to come, if you use quality parts and qualified staff to install and test. Once the carpet is down, the desks are in and staff are ready to work, it is too late to start troubleshooting intermittent network points.

Computers get inexorably faster, files and databases get bigger and more and more devices become network aware. Network speeds need to get faster and faster to keep pace. That means higher specifications for cable, termination points and patch panels. Most importantly, they need skilled and trained technicians to install them.

And don’t forget testing with the right equipment. Plugging a computer in and seeing if it connects to the switch is not good enough. You need a test device that can measure loss, noise, attenuation, cross-talk etc for a broad range of frequencies before you can say that the cable point is good.

The installation of cable in an office fit-out needs to be managed with the rest of the construction and decoration. Get us involved early in the project to advise not only where you will need network points, but how that needs to fit in to the project plan so you have a smooth start to work on move-day.
