Reduce the chances of ransomware crippling your business

Chances are, you are going to get attacked by ransom-ware within the next year.  You can reduce the effect it has on your business :

  • Reduce the chance of malware encrypting all your files by :
    1. Blocking malware at the firewall with a good scanner
    2. Restricting user access so that they cannot install software
    3. Limiting file server access so that users (and malware) cannot even see files they don’t need
    4. Keep anti-malware software on desktops up-to-date
  • Ensure you can restore your data if it gets encrypted :
    1. Take frequent backups – hourly is not unreasonable
    2. Ensure the backup files can’t be reached by malware
    3. Keep backups offsite so there is no chance of cross infection
    4. Be able to restore to multiple points over the last hours, days, weeks and months
    5. Check your backups worked!
  • Be prepared to recover quickly
    1. Have server backups that can be run as virtual servers that can be run up in minutes
    2. Standardize desktop environments so that reinstalling many computers is straightforward
    3. Keep recent images of desktop and laptop computers so that they can be wiped and re-installed quickly and easily
  • Educate your staff not to click on unexpected links in email or whilst web browsing
